Here are some of the scoliosis symptoms both the medical doctors and a normal person should check for:
- The shoulders of the affected person are of different heights: this is due to the fact that the shoulder blades are not connected to the spine at the same height. Also, even if the bones have the right connecting spots, the fact that the person has spent their entire life slouching may have just modified their entire bone structure. According to physical therapy specialists, there is little to be done about this problem outside of wearing braces. Be very careful of the physical exercises you do for adjusting your shoulders. Because of their position, close to your lungs and your heart, you could inflict some unwanted damage on those two very important organs.
- The skull is not perfectly centered: for a person to be considered normal from the point of view of skeletal structure, the top of the skull must be in perfect alignment with the middle of the pelvic bone. If that is not so, then that person could suffer from scoliosis.
- One of the hips is raised: if the curvature of the spine is near the lower back, one of the most important scoliosis symptoms is that one hip is slightly higher than the other.
- The two parts of the ribcage are at different heights: both parts of the ribcage should be at the same height. If that is not true, then there is something wrong with the way they are connected to the spine. That problem could be scoliosis.
- The skin over the backbone changes its texture: this patch of skin can turn scaly, red or it can grow more or less hair than usual. All of these are signs that something is not right with your spine. It can be considered one of the most important scoliosis symptoms.
Scoliosis pain: is it real?
Some people believe that scoliosis pain is an imaginary ache, that the sufferer needs to express his or her problem in some way and this constant scoliosis pain they find themselves in is their way of yelling for attention. Well, guess again. Scoliosis pain is very much real. Not only that it is real, but scoliosis pain ranks pretty high on the pain scale, coming at about a eight out of ten, when a toothache just measures for a six in its worse moments. The reason behind the scoliosis pain is simple: the muscles that surround the damaged area never get to relax. The fact that they are constantly contracted makes the patient feel sore, day after day. Eventually, if this continues for years at a time, the soreness evolves into scoliosis pain.
There is not much to be said about alleviating scoliosis pain. The usual suspects work in this case, just as well: some over – the – counter painkillers, some anti-inflammatory ointment and even some good old herbal medication.
